Matrimonial and family

We offer a sympathetic and understanding approach to family problems including advice on separation, divorce and other related concerns such as the arrangements for the children and the division of financial assets.

We will also be tough, when necessary, to achieve a fair result for you.

Reconciliation

All relationships go through bad times. Effective communication, sometimes through counselling can help.

The first part of our role is to encourage and facilitate communication and reconciliation. We will explore with you solutions to problems that threaten the relationship. Whilst we do not provide a counselling service, we can discuss issues with you and refer you to a specialist service for help, if appropriate.

Unfortunately, it is not always possible to prevent the breakdown of a relationship. Whether married or living together, the thought of a possible separation tends to lead to many questions and concerns. We are here to answer them.

Children

If you have children, their care will undoubtedly be your first priority.

  • Where will they live and with whom?
  • How often might they see the absent parent?
  • Can conditions be imposed upon contact ("access")?
  • How much child support should be paid?
  • Does the Child Support Agency have to be involved?
  • We can advise you on all issues regarding child care law, residence, contact and child support.

Separation

The main asset of a relationship is often the house where the family lives which may or may not be in joint names, often subject to a mortgage. If one of you is to leave the home - even for a period of "trial separation" - you will want to know:

  • Who will pay the mortgage?
  • Will the house have to be sold? If so, when?
  • Will one of you have to pay maintenance to the other to ensure the expenses of both are covered?
  • Will you become entitled to any Social Security Benefits?
  • How do you make the arrangements legally binding?
  • We can advise you on all aspects of the separation, including property rights, interim maintenance and longer-term separation agreements.

Divorce

It may be that you are in a marriage which has now irretrievably broken down and you need a divorce. You will want to know:

  • How can I get a divorce?
  • What are the grounds?
  • How long will it take?
  • What will it cost?
  • Who will pay for it?

We will guide you through, every step of the way.

Adoption

Not all family law is about bad news! If you are considering the adoption of a child, whether it is a child of your husband/wife from another relationship, or a child that you are adopting through an adoption agency, we can guide you through the procedures, help and advise.
